Beaches

The Indian Ocean has some of the most beautiful, white sand beaches and warm translucent water in the world.

With miles of coral reefs just off the East African coast, the water is calm and warm and offers excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is also where you can experience the thrill of inshore saltwater fly fishing and deep sea game fishing.

Over the last few years the Kenyan concept of beach lodges has been refined to incorporate a dash of luxury and lots of style, without diminishing the laid back, relaxed atmosphere.

These individual, small and exclusive retreats are the most popular places to stay along the East African coast, the concept having spread southwards through Tanzania, Zanzibar and Mozambique. They combine particularly well with safari lodges, offering the same personal service and attention to detail.

If you seek the ultimate in relaxation, you will be blissfully happy doing nothing but lying on the miles of deserted beach, sipping cocktails and eating the local crab and lobster.

If you are more active, you can fill your day with water sports like windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing, deep sea fishing and snorkelling.

There is a wide selection of resort hotels in Mauritius, on Zanzibar Island and on the Kenyan coast. By their very nature, they are bigger and more formal than the lodges, but are found in equally stunning locations, with long sandy beaches, fringed by palm trees, overlooking the Indian Ocean.

You will generally have the option of swimming in the ocean or a choice of swimming pools with many water sports to keep you busy.

The South African coast is spectacular, with sheer cliffs, beaches and coves. The water here (especially along the western coast and around Cape Town) is colder than on the East African coast, but there are many beautiful areas to explore and every type of accommodation in which to stay. As well as providing relaxing hideaways, there are unique wildlife experiences on the South African beaches…
…Witness the extraordinary egg laying and hatching of the loggerhead turtles at Rocktail Bay
…Watch whales plunging in the ocean and seek out great white sharks at Hermanus, Walker Bay and Plettenberg
…Canoe amongst penguins near Boulders Beach.
